Is GREED really so bad?

Posted on Thursday, Jul 30th, 2009 at 4:14pm by SteveNoble

"Greed, for lack of a better word, is good.  Greed is right. Greed works.  Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.  Greed, in all of its forms...greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge, has marked the upward surge of mankind..."  - Gordon Gekko from the movie Wall Street

Is GREED good?  Is it OK for a Christian to be AMBITIOUS?  Where do you draw the line between "having enough" and "wanting more"?  Is the Church in America full of a bunch of GREEDY followers of Christ?

Greed IS good

Greed or the desire to improve one's lot, is a wonderful gift and in the world, the 10-22% of the "Greedy" have provided jobs, goods and food for the the others...who were not greedy, unable or lazy... the greedy are a gift.

Greed is good?

It depends on your definition of the word "greed" (sorry to sound like former Pres. Clinton). I would not define it the way you have...I think you are describing ambition, which is ok with me. GREED is the desire for more than one NEEDS...an EXCESS if you will. Like one of the early industrialists siad when asked "how much is enough" - just a little bit more.

Is greed really so bad?

To be ambitious is a good thing if you are willing to work for an honest living and provide a legitimate good or service. When someone is so driven by the desire for money and power that it causes harm or at the expense of causing others suffering, it becomes detrimental.

Unfortunately capitalism is

Unfortunately capitalism is based solely on greed. I agree with Steve that the first poster is confusing greed with ambition. Greed is an undesirable trait while ambition is something we try to instill in our young like we do morals and ethics.
