The 7 Deadly Sins

Posted on Thursday, Jun 25th, 2009 at 8:05pm by SteveNoble

Pride...Lust...Greed...Envy...Anger...Gluttony...Sloth.  How do these sins manifest themselves in the Church?  How do they show up in your own life?  This Saturday we are discussing SLOTH - THE AVOIDANCE OF PHYSICAL OR SPIRITUAL WORK.  Do you struggle with your prayer life?  How about spending time in God's Word?  Bible study?  Maybe you don't like to "break a sweat" and when the time comes to do some dirty work, you look for a way out.  Perhaps sloth is a weakness for you.  What can we do to avoid this?  Why is this a sin?

The 7 Deadly Sins - Alive and well in the Church

Which church does this refer to - any church in particular or the Christian church in general? The Church of England (Anglican) also preaches against these sins, but, alas, not all members of the congregation take the admonitions to avoid sin on board conscientiously, as many find to their cost - hence unhappiness at one's lot, depression, the bringing of children into the world in a state of bastardy, lack of achievement, failure to achieve spiritual equilibrium, etc., etc. But the C of E does not give up on its objective to get people to "turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ".

The American Church in this case...

For the sake of this series on the radio program I am referring to the American Church. I had all but forgotten the list of these 7 sins, but when I came upon them I thought they were a good representation of the most common sins that plague our churches in America. I hope that we will dive deep and seek to deal with these on a personal level, and not just focus on the "speck of dust" in other people's eyes!
