The financial meltdown and the tithe...what is the right Christian response?

Posted on Thursday, Apr 2nd, 2009 at 9:41pm by SteveNoble

We are in the middle of a financial and moral meltdown...and it seems that we need God more now than ever before...so what are we doing with the resources He has given us?  GIVING LESS AND HORDING MORE!  How do you think Christians in America should respond?  Is it ok to give less?  Does the New Testament even support the tithe?  Should we give God less so that we can keep more?  Where is our faith?   Are we just getting what we deserve?

What should Christians do?  What are YOU doing?

Tithing

I’m not working right now and can barely make ends meet with my unemployment. But I won’t give up tithing. Lately, I’ve been throwing in a little extra on top of the tithe, but it wasn’t something I planned to do. It just sort of happened. God blesses our giving, although it may not always be in a financial way. You should never give just to get something. I don’t believe tithing should be done in a legalistic way. Nor do I believe that if you miss a tithe once in a great while, God will punish you. But my money belongs to God. He’s the one who provides it for me. His Word says he will provide all my needs. (Needs—not wants!) That’s his promise. Giving to him gives me joy, and I will always give to him first.
