Are most Christian dad's the Spiritual Heads of their Households?

Posted on Saturday, Jan 17th, 2009 at 10:22am by SteveNoble

Jesus taught us that a tree is known by its fruit.  So what fruit are Christian dad's producing?  The statistics are alarming and point to a resounding NO!  Most Christian Dads are NOT the Spiritual Heads of their Households.

I think one of the biggest challenges for us Christian dads is that most of us don't even know what it looks like to play that role!  I have never heard a sermon on it in my church, and I have never seen a class or study on it offered in my community.  But there is HOPE for us in the Word of God...and there are lots of resources out there if we just take the time to look!

My guest on today's show is Bob Reccord...a man of God who has been speaking to men and these types of issues form years.  You can check him out at www.madetocount.com and www.totallifeimpact.com

WHAT DO YOU THINK?  HOW ARE CHRISTIAN MEN DOING ON THIS SUBJECT?  WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?  WHAT'S THE SOLUTION?  WHAT DOES THE "SPIRITUAL HEAD OF THE HOUSEHOLD" DO, ANYWAY?  DO YOU HAVE SOME GREAT ADVICE OR RESOURCES?

Apathy is not an option here...so PLEASE share your comments!

GREAT book on this topic!!!

Here is my #1 suggestion after knowing God's Word for learning how to be the Spiritual Head of your Household! FAMILY MAN, FAMILY LEADER by Philip Lancaster You can find it at Amazon.com A MUST READ!!! Steve Noble, Host & Father & Spiritual Head of my Household!

Spiritual Head of Household

Any dad who wants to can do this. But, the key is INTENTIONALITY!!! It doesn't just happen. Here are a few suggestions... 1. Start praying with you wife. If you have never done it before, begin simple. "Lord, I thank you for my wife. She is a gift to me. Help me, help her become the best she can be. I want to honor her as the spiritual leader of our home. Teach me how to do that." 2. Read your Bible daily. If you read a chapter a day you can read the entire Bible in 2 years...2 chapters will do it in one year. 3. Show affection to your wife in front of your kids. The best gift to them is love their mother. 4. Find a man who you know is doing a good job at being a spiritual head of his home and meet with him and ask him to share with you what he does, how he does it, when, etc. 5. Read about it. Steve offered a good book idea. I wrote LAUNCHING YOUR KIDS FOR LIFE. 6. Start today. That's the intentional part. And if you fumble, or miss regularity, just start again. Don't use missing as an excuse.

Authenticity

I'm the Father of two wonderful small Boys. However, their mother and I are not together. Therefore, I try to make every moment with them count. I start by letting them be boys and not restricting thoughts, comments or questions. I use their thoughts, good and bad, with the aid of the Holy Spirit, as teaching opportunities to help correct their thinking. I try to do this without belittling them or tearing them down for being a fallen being in need of a savior. I also confess my failures and short comings when they become apparent and use those as opportunities to show them I'm in the boat with them calling on our Lord for help.

Spiritual Head

As a wife, and mother it is very difficult to have the role as the spiritual head of the house. I have been married for 12 years and love my husband very much. I have prayed and prayed that the Lord would show him how to be the head of the house as well as the spiritual head. It is partly my fault because I always wanted things done a certain way, but over the years I have found that the only true way is the Lord's way. I see the changes in my husband and I REJOICE! I get tired and weary, but I know that the Lord will not forsake me and he hears my prayers. Children need their daddy's to be strong in the Lord. Mothers too, but their is something about the Father figure.

"If religion were true, its

"If religion were true, its followers would not try to bludgeon their young into artificial conformity, but would merely insist on their unbending quest for truth." - H.P. Lovecraft Any adult that tells a child to believe in things they themselves cannot prove is a child abuser and should be locked up with the rest of the perverts in a federal prison. "If a child is normally intelligent, he is almost bound to get the impression that there is something off about religious statements. If he is taken to church, for example, he hears that death is the gateway to eternal life, and should be welcomed rather than shunned; yet outside he sees death regarded as the greatest of all evils, and everything possible is done to postpone it... The child soon gets the idea that there are two kinds of truth - the ordinary kind, and another, rather confusing and embarrassing kind, into which it is best not to inquire too closely... Now all this is bad intellectual training..." - Margaret Knight (1903-1983).

This comment scares me. My father was a wonderful teacher in sunday school, a dedicated decon, a prayer leader, a house group mentor, cleaned the church, painted walls you name it.. he was wonderful at it.. Yet now, finaly, a man convicted of domestic violence against his wife and daughter. Now if i met anyone who knows him, they say "surely not, not him, but he was such a good decon/teacher/whatever". to the extent that he still goes to our old church where we are no longer welcome.

If you want to become the spritual head of your children, cry to Jesus to show you how, because that is the only way. Children are a gift only from God. No matter how much YOU wanted/want your child you only have them through the grace of God. God knows your children better than you do, and he knows you better than anyone else. Don't look to other men to teach you things, as we all have specks of dust in our eyes, look only to to Jesus, the only one who can see clearly what needs to be done.
